Quick action by bus driver ensures safety as student-filled bus catches fire

SAN JUAN BAUTISTA, Calif (KMPH) A charter bus that was carrying students from an elementary school caught fire on Wednesday. First responders arrived at the scene on Highway 156 eastbound at Highway 101 in Atwater, California as the commercial vehicle was in engulfed in flames and smoke.

Fire crews were able to extinguish the fire.

Fortunately, no injuries were reported due to the bus driver getting everyone off the bus safely, reported KMPH.

The students from Atwater Elementary School District were returning after a field trip to the Monterey Bay Aquarium.

No injuries were reported among the 56 passengers or the 47 students on board.

The fire reportedly started near the rear axle and a blown tire may have been the cause.

The students were picked up by another bus to bring everyone back.

Aromas Tri-County Fire, CAL FIRE, San Juan Bautista/ Hollister Fire responded to the fire.
